Volkswagen Enhances IQ.DRIVE for 2027 Models

Volkswagen is taking another step forward in driver assistance technology with new enhancements to its IQ.DRIVE® Advanced Driver Assistance System. For the 2027 model year, Volkswagen is introducing several updates designed to provide drivers with additional support and convenience across select models. The latest IQ.DRIVE advancements are coming to the 2027 Atlas SUV, VW Golf, Volkswagen Tiguan and Electric ID. Buzz, adding new capabilities to an already comprehensive suite of driver assistance technologies.

New IQ.DRIVE Features for 2027

Volkswagen’s IQ.DRIVE system brings together a range of driver assistance features, including Travel Assist, Front Assist, Active Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Traffic Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Assist and Emergency Assist. For 2027, several of these technologies receive important updates.

Driver-Initiated Lane Changes with Travel Assist

One of the most notable updates is the expansion of driver-initiated lane changes through Travel Assist. On applicable 2027 models, the driver can initiate an assisted lane change using the turn signal. The vehicle uses its sensors to monitor the surrounding traffic and, when conditions allow, assists with the maneuver. This builds on Travel Assist’s ability to provide assisted longitudinal and lateral control, helping maintain a set distance from traffic ahead while supporting the vehicle’s position within the lane.

Emergency Assist Plus Adds Another Layer of Support

Volkswagen is also introducing Emergency Assist Plus on applicable models.

If the system detects that the driver has become unresponsive under qualifying conditions, Emergency Assist Plus can provide additional assistance by guiding the vehicle toward the right-hand shoulder and bringing it to a stop.

The feature is designed as an emergency support system rather than a replacement for an attentive driver. Volkswagen emphasizes that IQ.DRIVE technologies operate within their system limitations and that drivers remain responsible for controlling their vehicles.

Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control Gets an Upgrade

Volkswagen is also enhancing Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control (pACC) for 2027.

The updated system is designed to make speed adjustments more intuitive. Drivers can use accelerator input to accept an increased speed following a system notification, while the system also expands its capabilities to ramps and can provide deceleration and guidance when approaching exits. Before an automatic speed adjustment, the Digital Cockpit displays a notification that allows the driver to accept or reject the change.

New Rearview Camera Can Detect Pedestrians

The 2027 Atlas, ID. Buzz and Tiguan also introduce a new rearview camera system capable of detecting pedestrians behind the vehicle.

When reversing at low speeds, the system can recognize a pedestrian and provide assistance that may include automatic braking to help mitigate a potential collision. As with other IQ.DRIVE features, system operation depends on conditions and the vehicle’s equipment.

Road Experience Management Comes to the ID. Buzz

The 2027 Volkswagen ID. Buzz receives another technology enhancement through Road Experience Management (REM) data.

REM uses information gathered from real-world road users, including camera-based information about features such as lane markings, road signs and street lighting. This data can contribute to improved map quality and provide additional information that can support the vehicle’s driver assistance systems. For the 2027 ID. Buzz, REM data is included as part of Volkswagen’s In-Vehicle Premium service. A one-year trial is included with the vehicle.

Technology Designed to Support the Driver

Volkswagen’s latest IQ.DRIVE developments demonstrate how advanced driver assistance continues to evolve through a combination of cameras, radar, software and connected data.

Importantly, IQ.DRIVE is not an autonomous driving system. Volkswagen states that driver assistance features do not replace attentive driving and that drivers must remain engaged and ready to take control. System performance can also be affected by weather, road conditions, visibility and other factors.
