The 2026 Volkswagen Tiguan is earning major recognition after taking the top spot in the highly competitive Cars.com 2026 Compact SUV Challenge. Competing against eight popular compact SUVs, the redesigned Tiguan impressed judges with its premium interior, engaging driving dynamics, advanced technology, and spacious cabin.

“Tiguan continues to set the pace for what customers expect from a compact SUV, and this recognition from Cars.com reinforces that,” said Petar Danilovic, SVP, Product Marketing and Strategy, Volkswagen of America. “From its refined interior to responsive technology and everyday practicality, Tiguan strikes a balance that appeals to drivers and families alike.”

A Big Win in a Competitive Segment

Compact SUVs remain one of the most competitive vehicle categories, making the Tiguan’s victory even more impressive. The Tiguan finished ahead of several top rivals, including the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid, Kia Sportage Hybrid, and Toyota RAV4.

The latest Tiguan builds on Volkswagen’s redesign introduced for the new generation model. Updates for 2026 include refreshed styling, improved technology, and enhanced performance. Higher trims, including the SEL R-Line Turbo, feature a more powerful turbocharged engine producing up to 268 horsepower, giving the Tiguan a more engaging driving experience compared to many competitors.

The SUV also offers:

  • Large touchscreen infotainment system
  • Modern digital cockpit displays
  • Enhanced driver-assistance technology
  • Premium interior finishes and available massaging seats

More Than Just Performance

The Cars.com challenge evaluated vehicles in real-world conditions, including:

  • Highway fuel economy testing
  • Cargo space measurements
  • Child safety seat fitment
  • Comfort and usability assessments
  • Overall value scoring

The Tiguan’s ability to perform consistently well across nearly every category helped secure its overall victory.

“Cars.com’s experts enjoyed driving the 2026 Volkswagen Tiguan, but the compact SUV impressed our judges in a number of other areas as well,” said Mike Hanley, Cars.com senior road test editor. “Its combination of upscale quality, premium amenities, and passenger space helped it take the top spot in our comparison test.”
